DIY Clothes: Elbow Patches & Faux Pockets

The weather is a little warmer and the flowers are starting to bud, but I'm not ready to wear tank tops or shorts just yet. Winter is about to end and Spring will start anew. All your standard sweatshirts are getting marked down prices, but why save them for next winter? We can amp those sweaters now and wear them now, when the weather is still calling for a sweater. Here is another DIY tutorial on how to make your normal, everyday sweatshirt trendy!

Do you want to create that look? It's really easy. All you'll need is 1 plain sweatshirt like the one below. A piece of fabric, any design you like that would go well with your sweatshirt color. And I didn't feel like sewing, so I used heat and bond to attach my fabric to my sweatshirt. Alternatively, you can use fabric glue or of course, sewing by hand or machine. (Other materials: Writing utensil, scissors, and an iron)

Now you're already to begin! Here are 6 easy steps to creating your very own sweatshirt with elbow patches and a faux pocket!

Elbow Patches
  1. Iron your heat and bond to the back side of your fabric. Make sure the glue interface is facing the fabric, so you will be sewing the paper side. Heat and bond actually allows you to make your very own iron on applique. Don't put the heat on your iron too high.

  2. Once you ironed on your heat and bond paper, fold your fabric like so. First fold the applique in half, then fold the two halves of your fold into halves. This way, when we draw the shape of a half of a ellipse. So like you would cut out a heart or a circle, day half of your ellipse on one side of the heat and bond paper, then cut it out.

  3. You have two elbow pads like the ones pictured below, equally sized thanks to the trick in step 2.

  4. Draw a pocket, you can do is a square, but I really like the shape of these pockets below.  Then iron it onto the fabric. You see how I drew the pattern and cut my applique a little bigger, this will make it easier to cut out of the fabric.

  5. Now iron on everything!!! Remove the paper from the backside of your fabric, just like you would a sticker!

  6. I added some extra studs... ahah, it's me, what do you expect? and wallah! YOU HAVE YOURSELF AN AMAZING NEW, TRENDY SWEATSHIRT!

I styled the sweatshirt with some mint pants and crocheted ankle boots. You could also pair this sweatshirt with some destroyed denim shorts or even jeans! This is a staple, but fun piece to have inside your closet.

 Toodles,

Angelina
