DIY Clothes: Houndstooth Sweetheart Dress

This tutorial is a little more complex, but if you know how to hem and if you have patience, this DIY project is for you! I wanted a playful dress that had a very stiff print. As you know, I love to mix hard and soft, whether it be in the architecture of the piece or the fabric style, I just believe there is a ying and yang to everything in life and this can also be found within fashion. So I wanted to make a flowy, but structured dress. Use a harsh print like houndstooth, but use a soft color palette of grey and cream.

I picked up this fabric at Walmart for $2 dollars a yard, I purchased 1 yard of fabric. So this dress was only $2, not bad!

  1. Find a sweetheart dress you already own and use that as your stencil for the bodice of your design. Make sure that your fabric is folded in half so that the front of your bodice is attached as one piece. You can do as I did and cut panels.
  2. Cut out a circle skirt by measuring out a 18.5 inch radius circle. Fold your fabric into fours and use your ruler or measuring utensil as a compass to cut a perfectly round circle. Cut a circle for your stomach as well at the center of the circle.
  3. Sew pieces together and hem everything!!! Sew the bottom of your bodice to the inner circle of your circle skirt. Add a belt and wallah! You have a sweetheart dress!

Toodles,
A
